Can You Give Me A Little Elbow Room?

Posted in Breakfast by Missy Shana on September 16, 2008

The Elbow Room, is a nice little cafe in the heart of downtown. People were always telling me about how rude the wait staff acts, how they make fun of you, or tell you to get your own coffee, so naturally I had to go try it.

I’ve now been to the Elbow Room on two different occasions. The first time my Eggs Benedict was served cold, so let’s base this critique on the 2nd time round. It was a Thursday afternoon, and the place was pretty empty, except for a young group of hip-hoppers, and two men in a business meeting. Our waiter was a 30ish year old, buzzed, blond, buff tattooed man. He greeted us at the door and shyly told us to sit our “asses in the back there”. That’s it? I showed up prepared to have my self-esteem bruised, at least a bit. About 10 seconds later, our waiter returns and asks us if we’re ready to order already!? He was a shy little sheep, but I appreciate the effort.

Our food arrived quite quickly, I assume that’s because the place was empty. This time my benny was warm and tasted pretty good. It consisted of two poached eggs, on a toasted english muffin with black forest ham, drizzled with the most vibrant yellowy-orange hollandaise sauce I’ve ever seen. But, I did pick up this little tid-bit: once you take a bite of the eggs you notice this underlying vinegar taste, which makes me think they probably poach their eggs in vinegar water. Maybe they do it to cut the fat or something, but I just couldn’t help but notice.

Also, if you want water you have to get it yourself. There’s a little stand in the middle of the restaurant that holds plastic cups and jugs of cold water. And another thing, make sure you finish your meal, hide it in your napkin, pass it off to the guy/girl your eating with, or throw it under the table and to the left, under the table and to the left, or else you will have to give a donation to charity. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. I watched the waiter as he told one customer to “stop lookin so fuckin’ lost” when he didn’t understand that he had to make a donation.

Eggs Benny at the elbow room is $7.95, hashbrowns not included, and you better get your own fuckin water !

Eggs are poached in a pot of boiling water with a little bit of vinegar so they won’t break apart and will stay firm.

At home, some people use the fancy Teflon pan with the little cups in it to achieve the same effect.

Oh really? Well, that makes sense. Thanks for sharing Saffron!

I’ve also seen these cute silicone poachers that look like cracked eggshells:
